Nest Labs is a producer of automated, programmable, and self learning systems that connects thermostats, smoke detectors, and security cameras to other appliances through the use of WiFi. Nest Labs is designed to save energy and make life more autonomous.

Nest works by using sensors and WiFi to collect data, and uses this data to create a schedule for your heating and air conditioning system in your home or business. Using mathematical algorithms, it calculates when you are and are not home, and controls your house accordingly. This makes your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system more efficient, and uses less energy saving money.

It is not just HVAC that can be controlled though. The Nest Learning Thermostat works with 95% of 24V heating and cooling systems, including gas, electric, forced air, heat pump, radiant, oil, hot water, solar and geothermal. This means it can control your heating, cooling, heat pump, humidifier, dehumidifier, fans and power.

The nest thermostat has five different types of sensors to control the system. The first is the temperature sensor which in itself contains 10 sensors that respond to temperature. The second sensor is the humidity sensor, followed by the near-field activity sensor, the far-field activity sensor, and the ambient light sensor.

The only requirements for nest are a WiFi network, a phone or tablet running IOS or Android, and the nest app itself.
